This course is delivered in 52 individual lectures via email in English. The course covers the earliest records of Kongo religion, the religious implications for traditional religious practice of the contact between the Kongo and the Portugues and the presence and influence of their religion in the Kongo and Angola since the 1490s, a scant hundred years after the last Pagan nation in Europe had converted. The course discusses initiatic schools, Minkisi, priests, Kimpa Vita, divination, the trans Atlantic connection, Palo Monte, Palo Mayombe, Kimbisa, Kimbanda, Umbanda and Kumina among other topics. This course will not cover methods of practice, instead it provides an historic background on the character and development of modern Kongo derived religions which mostly is absent from traditional religious training but which is invaluable for the modern practitioner.
